Getting to Greece by air
Pick the airport for the place you will actually sleep, not the one that looks famous on a map.
Typical inbound pattern from outside Greece: a European hub (London, Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam, Munich, Rome, Istanbul, Dubai — among others) into ATH, or a seasonal direct into an island airport. I will not list frequencies; airlines change them.
| IATA | Airport | Use it when | Official |
|---|---|---|---|
| ATH | Athens Eleftherios Venizelos | First visit, connections, Piraeus/Rafina ferries, mainland KTEL | aia.gr |
| SKG | Thessaloniki Makedonia | Northern Greece, city of Thessaloniki, Halkidiki, mainland north | skg-airport.gr |
| HER | Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis | Central/east Crete; many summer European flights | Confirm current operator site; also visitgreece.gr |
| CHQ | Chania Ioannis Daskalogiannis | Western Crete | Fraport regional: fraport-greece.com |
| JTR | Santorini (Thira) | Straight to Santorini; small terminal, summer crush | Fraport regional: fraport-greece.com |
Other useful codes you will see on tickets (not fully documented here): RHO Rhodes, CFU Corfu, ZTH Zakynthos, JMK Mykonos. Many are seasonal.
