Athens: the interchange that is also a city

Use Athens as a proper city, not only a layover — but be honest that for many visitors it is also the plug where planes, metro, KTEL and ships meet.

Official tourism portrait: Visit Greece — Athens. They emphasise the archaeological core (Acropolis and the pedestrian ‘grand promenade’), the metro, and year-round city-break use. That is fair.

What it is for

• First and last nights on a Greece trip (ATH is here).
• Archaeology and museums you will not get on a three-island sprint.
• Food that is not only island-taverna cliché — if you leave the souvenir strip.
• Daylight buffer before a ferry: Piraeus rewards an extra hour, not a tight connection from a delayed long-haul.

What it is not

• A substitute for the islands if that is the trip you sold yourself.
• A place to “do in four hours from the airport” unless you enjoy suffering. The airport is not next to Syntagma.
